How can we help?

Most problems have a quick fix below. If yours doesn't, write to us.

Fix a common problem

Installing

Windows SmartScreen won't run the installer

Haul's installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen doesn't recognise it.

 1. Choose More info in the SmartScreen window.
 2. Choose Run anyway.
Haul doesn't open, or opens to a blank window

Haul draws its window with Microsoft Edge WebView2, which comes with Windows 10 and 11 but can be missing or damaged.

 1. Install or repair the WebView2 Runtime from Microsoft.
 2. Start Haul again.

Browser extension

The popup says Haul can't be reached
 1. Start Haul once, so it can register its helper with your browsers.
 2. In Haul, open Options → Browser Integration and choose Install / Repair.
 3. Close every window of the browser and open it again.
The extension doesn't show up in Chrome
 1. Add Haul Browser Integration from the Chrome Web Store.
 2. Open chrome://extensions and check that its switch is on.
 3. Pin it from the puzzle-piece button. More help with the extension
The extension doesn't show up in Firefox
 1. Add Haul Browser Integration from Firefox Add-ons.
 2. Open about:addons, choose Extensions and check that its switch is on.
 3. Make sure Haul is running. If the add-on can't reach it, choose Install / Repair in Haul's Options → Browser Integration and restart Firefox.
 4. Pin it from the puzzle-piece button. More help with Firefox
The extension doesn't show up in Safari

Safari's copy of the extension comes inside Haul for Mac, and Safari leaves it off until you turn it on. It needs Safari 18.4 or newer.

 1. Open Haul once, from your Applications folder.
 2. In Safari, open Settings → Extensions and tick Haul Browser Integration.
 3. Click its name, then Always Allow on Every Website…, and confirm, so it can catch downloads wherever they start.
 4. Click Haul's icon in the toolbar: it should say Connected. More help with Safari
Haul doesn't catch a download
 1. Check that Catch downloads on this site is on in the extension's popup.
 2. Make sure the site isn't excluded and the file isn't under your minimum size in Haul's options.
 3. Click without holding Alt, or right-click the link and send it to Haul.

Downloads

A download stopped or keeps retrying

Download links often expire after a while, and some servers limit how many connections they accept.

 1. Right-click the download and choose Refresh Download Address.
 2. Start the same download again from its page in your browser. Haul takes the new address and keeps its progress.
 3. If you use a proxy, check it under Options.
A download started again from 0%

The server doesn't allow resuming, or the file changed on the server. Haul then starts over rather than join two different versions of the file.

 1. Nothing to fix on your side. Downloads from that server can't be resumed.
Downloads are slower than expected
 1. Look at the status bar: if it says Limiter with a speed, click it to turn the speed limiter off.
 2. Some servers cap the speed of every download, whatever the number of connections.

Video and the player

A film won't play, or its picture looks washed out

Haul's player plays what your computer's video hardware can decode, and converts the rest as it plays. An HDR film that has to be converted loses its HDR.

 1. Give it a moment: a film starts once enough of it has arrived.
 2. Choose Open in… in the player's options to use another player.
A subtitle track says “Pictures, can't be shown”

Subtitles stored as pictures, as on Blu-ray and DVD, aren't shown yet. Text subtitles are.

 1. Pick a text track, or choose Open in… to use another player for this film.
A video won't download

Haul refuses encrypted and DRM-protected video. For other sites it relies on yt-dlp, and sites change often.

 1. Leave Keep Haul's copy of yt-dlp up to date on in Options, so fixes for changed sites arrive by themselves. That and saving site videos at all are part of Haul Pro.
 2. Try again later, once yt-dlp has caught up with the site.

Haul Pro

Haul shows a lock, or says a feature needs Haul Pro

Your trial has ended, so Haul is running as Haul Free. Compare the plans

 1. Choose Get Haul Pro, or buy it here: $12.99 once, for 3 computers.
 2. Already have a key? Open Help → License… and enter it.
My key says it's on too many computers

A license is active on 3 computers at a time.

 1. On a computer you still use: Help → License…, then deactivate it.
 2. For a computer that's gone, free its seat on your license page.
 3. Then enter the key on the new computer.

Updates

Haul says “Work is in progress”

We pause Haul when a release has a serious problem. Your downloads are paused, not lost.

 1. Wait for the fix, or choose Check again. Haul carries on by itself when it's back.
Haul says “Update required”

This version is no longer supported.

 1. Choose Update and Restart. Haul installs the new version and opens again.
No updates arrive
 1. Choose Help → Check for Updates…
 2. Turn on Check for updates automatically in Options → General.
