Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what people ask most.

Getting started

Which systems does Haul run on?

Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit, and Macs with Apple silicon (M1 and later) on macOS 11 or newer.

Is Haul safe to install?

Yes. Every release is built automatically from the same source, and Haul checks the signature of each update before installing it. No ads, no toolbars, no bundled offers.

Why does Windows show a SmartScreen warning?

Haul's installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen doesn't recognise it. Choose More info, then Run anyway.

Should I use the installer or the portable ZIP?

The installer sets Haul up for your account and needs no admin rights. The ZIP runs from any folder; keep haul-host.exe next to Haul.exe.

Can I bring my downloads over from IDM?

Yes. Haul imports IDM's .ef2 export lists, with their referrers and cookies, as well as plain text lists and any file full of links. How to switch from IDM

Downloading

How many connections does Haul use?

Eight per file by default and up to 32 with Haul Pro, or up to 4 in Haul Free, with limits per server. Haul starts with one and adds more while all of them are receiving.

What if my connection drops or the computer restarts?

Haul picks up where it stopped, as long as the server allows resuming, which most do. If the file changed on the server meanwhile, it starts over instead of mixing two versions.

Will Haul slow down my computer?

It's built to stay out of the way: the engine is native code and the window only redraws what changes. Set a speed limit if you want browsing and calls to keep the bandwidth.

Can I schedule downloads?

Yes, with Haul Pro. Queues start and stop at set times on the weekdays you choose, and can sleep or shut down the computer when they finish, or hibernate it on Windows. Haul Free has the main queue, without a schedule.

Does Haul work behind a proxy?

Yes. Haul Free uses your system proxy. Haul Pro adds HTTP and HTTPS, SOCKS4/5 with remote DNS, a bypass list and PAC scripts.

Can I see what's in a ZIP before downloading it?

Yes, in every plan. Right-click a ZIP download and choose Preview ZIP contents to open its folders, when the server allows reading parts of the file.

Does Haul download X photos and WeTransfer links?

Yes, in every plan. Paste a link to an X post to save its photos in original quality, one or all at once, or a WeTransfer link to download the transfer.

Can I start downloads from a script?

Yes: --add URL, with --dir and --name, or the classic /d URL /p folder /f name. Links starting haul://add?url= work too.

Browser

Which browsers does Haul work with?

Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Opera, Arc and Helium through the extension from the Chrome Web Store, Firefox through Firefox Add-ons, and Safari on a Mac with the extension inside Haul.

How do I add the extension?

Add Haul Browser Integration from the Chrome Web Store. It works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi and Arc.

And in Firefox?

Add Haul Browser Integration from Firefox Add-ons. It does the same as in Chrome.

And in Safari?

The extension comes inside Haul for Mac. In Safari, open Settings → Extensions, turn on Haul Browser Integration and allow it on every website. It needs Safari 18.4 or newer, and catches clicks on links; for anything else, right-click and choose Haul. How to add it to Safari

How do I let the browser keep a download?

Hold Alt while you click the link, or turn off catching for that site in the extension's popup.

Video

Can Haul save videos?

Yes, with Haul Pro. It saves HLS and DASH streams, and videos from many sites through the yt-dlp that comes with it, in the quality you pick.

Can I watch a video while it downloads?

Yes. Press Play on any video or audio download and it starts as soon as enough has arrived. Jump anywhere in the film and Haul fetches that part first. The player is free on direct files; site videos and streams need Haul Pro to download at all.

Does the player remember where I stopped?

Yes. Each film picks up where you left off, and Haul remembers your volume, the languages you chose and the subtitle size for the next one.

Which video formats can the player handle?

MKV, MP4, AVI, WMV, FLV, TS, MPEG and more, in Dolby Vision, HDR and SDR, with every audio and text subtitle track to choose from. How HDR looks depends on your screen and video hardware. Subtitles stored as pictures, as on Blu-ray and DVD, aren't shown yet.

Will it download protected videos?

No. Haul refuses encrypted and DRM-protected streams and videos.

What am I allowed to download?

Only what you have the right to. Haul doesn't change what a site permits; respecting copyright and each site's terms is up to you.

Haul Free and Haul Pro

Is Haul free?

Yes. Haul Free has no time limit. Haul Pro adds 32 connections per file, videos and streams, scheduled queues, the Site Grabber and more, for $12.99 once, on 3 computers. Compare the plans

Can I try Haul Pro first?

Yes. Haul 2.0 gives every new computer 7 days of Haul Pro, and 90 days if you used Haul on it before 2.0. After that it carries on as Haul Free until you enter a key.

How do I move Haul Pro to another computer?

A license is active on 3 computers at a time. Deactivate it on the old one (Help › License…) or free its seat on your license page, then enter the key on the new one.

Who handles the payment and refunds?

Dodo Payments, our merchant of record: it takes the payment, adds any taxes and sends the receipt. For a refund, email contact@dunebits.com.

Privacy, updates and support

Does Haul collect any data?

Only anonymous usage statistics, and you can turn them off. There are no accounts and no tracking. Haul sends its version, your system's release and build, the processor type and how many downloads finished or failed, never addresses or file names. Statistics are on by default; Haul shows a one-time notice, and Options → General turns them off at any time, which deletes Haul's random install number. For the Haul Pro trial and license, Haul also checks with our license server every few days, with a hashed device id and your computer's name. The privacy policy has the details.

How do updates work?

Haul checks shortly after it starts and every six hours, verifies the signed update and restarts. Running downloads carry on in the new version. You can turn this off in Options → General.

Where are my passwords kept?

Site and proxy passwords live in the Windows Credential Manager or the macOS Keychain, not in Haul's own files.

Something isn't working. Who do I tell?
